With the continuation of this short series, we'll discuss what the Miami Dolphins could do defensively to help improve the team, and hopefully avoid having the possible departure of Jared Odrick from hurting them too badly.
The Defense
The 2015 Free Agency has a lot of good Defensive Line players available, and if Jared Odrick were to move on, we'd be able to replace his production somewhat. Two possible replacements are Corey Peters of the Atlanta Falcons and Stephen Paea of the Chicago Bears. Both are young players with a lot of room for development, and improvement, but it will be hard to replace what Jared Odrick brought to the team if he were to depart.
The Defense Line draft this year isn't as good as it has in the past, and what I mean by that is that you have wonderful players going in the first 2 rounds, but you get past those and end up having to draft prospects instead of ready starters.
The Dolphins still have multiple untested rookie DTs who could possibly become the replacements of Jared Odrick, and it's not necessarily a bad thing that you are getting a prospect instead of a starter, because they have a chance to be developed into someone you want instead of being thrown into the fire immediately. In the AFC East, a lot of the in-division rivals have good running backs, and we have to make sure we can stop the run game.
Our line backing corp this past year wasn't that amazing, and it was shown when we faced teams with good ground games. Dannell Ellerbe played in game all season, and with the savings we'd receive from cutting him, he is sure to be gone.
This year however, there are a lot of good line backers in the Free Agency, such Malcolm Smith, who notched 37 tackles last year and Spencer Paysinger could both be young, talented players brought in to play alongside Jelani Jenkins who is on the rise. We could also go the other route, and draft Benardrick McKinney or Denzel Perryman. Either way, the Dolphins have to improve their Linebacking corp if they want to be contenders for anything.
